When DIY Pet Urine Cleaning Makes the Problem Worse

Pet accidents often look like a small surface spot, so it’s common to reach for boiling or very hot water, vinegar, dish soap, household cleaners or store-bought deodorizers. Unfortunately, treating pet urine without knowing how far it has travelled can sometimes make the problem more difficult to correct.

Pouring water or excessive liquid onto an affected area can spread contamination deeper or farther through absorbent materials. Dish soap and other household products can leave residues behind, while repeated applications of different cleaners may interfere with subsequent professional treatment. Fragrances may temporarily cover the smell without addressing contamination beneath the surface.

If the stain or odour remains—or keeps returning—adding more products may not be the answer. Professional assessment can help determine where the contamination has travelled and what treatment is appropriate for the affected material.

Water Can Spread The Problem

Adding large amounts of  water can move urine contamination beyond the original visible spot and deeper into absorbent materials such as carpet backing and underlay.

Vinegar Isn't the Right Solution for Every Surface

DIY vinegar treatments may not reach contamination beneath the surface and aren't appropriate for every material or cleaning situation.

Dish Soap Can Leave Residue Behind

Dish soap isn't formulated as a professional carpet or upholstery cleaning product and can leave residue that may attract soil or complicate subsequent cleaning.

Masking the Odour Isn't Treating the Source

Deodorizers and fragrances can temporarily cover pet odours, but persistent urine contamination may remain within or beneath the affected material.

Still Smelling Pet Urine After Cleaning?

If you've already tried household cleaners, vinegar, pouring water onto the affected area or store-bought pet odour products and the smell keeps returning, applying more products may not solve the underlying problem. Pet urine can penetrate beyond the visible surface, making proper assessment important. CanaClean™ evaluates the affected material and recommends targeted treatment based on the extent of contamination.

Pet Urine Can Travel Beyond the Visible Spot

Pet urine contamination is not always limited to the spot you can see or smell. Depending on the surface, material and amount of liquid, urine can spread beyond the visible area or penetrate into absorbent materials beneath the surface.

Professional treatment starts with understanding where the contamination may have travelled before selecting the appropriate process.

Surface Contamination

Some pet accidents remain relatively localized and may be suitable for targeted professional treatment.

Deeper Contamination

Urine can penetrate carpet backing, underlay, upholstery cushions and other absorbent materials, extending beyond what is visible at the surface

Material Matters

Carpet, upholstery, rugs, mattresses, grout and hard flooring respond differently to urine contamination and require different treatment approaches.

Cleaning Has Limits

When contamination has penetrated deeply into materials that cannot be adequately treated, professional cleaning alone may not completely resolve the problem.

What Our Clients Say About Pet Urine & Odour Treatment

WHEN THE ODOUR WOULDN’T GO AWAY

“I found CanaClean through an online search while looking for a reliable company to remove cat urine odor. Previously, my landlady had hired another cleaning company, but unfortunately it didn’t make any difference at all—it felt like the money was completely wasted. "

FOUR KIDS, A DOG & CARPETS RESTORED

“With four kids and a dog running around, we honestly didn’t think it was possible for our carpets to look this good again. They look brand new, smell so fresh, and even have that soft, ‘new carpet’ feeling on our feet again.”

PET HAIR, STUBBORN STAINS & CARPETS RESTORED

“For the Carpets we figured the stains were there for good but they actually came out, and the carpets look almost new now. Pets were allowed in the unit before us and even though we'd vacuumed a bunch of times, you would not believe the amount of hair that came up. Kind of gross, but so satisfying lol.”

Pet Urine Stain & Odour Treatment FAQ

Can professional cleaning completely remove pet urine odour?

Pet urine odour can often be significantly reduced or eliminated when the affected material can be appropriately treated. Results depend on the surface, extent and depth of contamination. If urine has penetrated into underlay, subflooring, furniture cushioning or other inaccessible materials, professional cleaning alone may not completely resolve the problem. CanaClean™ assesses the affected area to determine the appropriate treatment and explain what results can reasonably be expected.

Why does pet urine smell come back after cleaning?

Pet urine odour can return when contamination remains beneath or beyond the area that was cleaned. Urine may penetrate carpet backing, underlay, upholstery cushions, grout or other materials where surface cleaning cannot reach it. Changes in moisture and humidity can also make residual odours more noticeable. Identifying how far the contamination has travelled is an important part of selecting the appropriate treatment.

Can you remove old or dried pet urine stains and odours?

Older or dried pet urine may still be treatable. Results depend on the affected material, how deeply the urine has penetrated, previous cleaning attempts and whether permanent staining or material changes have occurred. CanaClean™ evaluates the affected area before recommending treatment.

Why do DIY pet urine treatments sometimes not work?

Pet urine can travel farther or deeper than the visible spot. Hot water, excessive moisture, vinegar, dish soap, household cleaners and deodorizers may not reach contamination beneath the surface, and some treatments can leave residue or spread moisture through absorbent materials. Professional treatment focuses on identifying the affected material and extent of contamination before selecting the appropriate process.

Can pet urine stains always be removed?

No. Many pet urine stains can be improved, but complete removal cannot be guaranteed. Urine can permanently affect dyes, fibres, finishes and other materials, particularly when contamination has remained for an extended period or has previously been treated with other products. CanaClean™ will explain any limitations identified during assessment.

Can you treat pet urine that has soaked into carpet and underlay?

Carpet affected by pet urine can often be professionally treated. If urine has travelled through the carpet backing and into the underlay or subfloor, treatment becomes more complex. Depending on the extent of contamination, additional treatment or replacement of affected materials may be necessary. Assessing the depth of contamination helps determine the appropriate approach.

Can you treat pet urine on upholstery, area rugs and mattresses?

Yes, appropriate upholstery, area rugs and mattresses may be professionally treated for pet urine stains and odours. The treatment depends on the fibres, dyes, construction, condition and depth of contamination. CanaClean™ assesses the material before selecting the appropriate cleaning and treatment process.

Can you treat pet urine on tile, grout and luxury vinyl flooring?

Yes. CanaClean™ provides pet urine treatment for appropriate tile, grout and luxury vinyl flooring. Treatment depends on the flooring material, condition, grout, seams and where the urine has travelled. Porous grout and flooring seams can require particular attention because contamination may extend beyond the visible surface.
